Not A Love Story (2011) Movie Review

'Not A Love Story';
Starring: Mahie Gill, Deepak Dobriyal, Rajesh Gehi;
Directed by: Ram Gopal Varma;

In this real life story, Ram Gopal Varma sets his sights on a horrible slice of reality and invests it with his eccentric touch for cinema with Not A Love Story. One aspect, though, that might go against the Ram Gopal Varma helmed film is the fact that the Neeraj Grover murder case has been dissected by the media to such an extent that there is no room for thrills as the viewer knows what's going to occur next…

Not A Love Story spins around Anusha (Mahie Gill), a starry eyed girl from Chandigarh who lands in big, bad Mumbai to become an actress despite misgivings by her obsessive lover Robin Fernandez (Deepak Dobriyal). After a brief struggle and a mild flirtation with disillusionment on encountering lecherous men hinting at the casting couch, Anusha finally lands a role in a film through the efforts of a common friend Ashish (Ajay Gehl). A grateful Anusha allows a drunken Ashish to come upstairs to her room after a night of pub hopping and ends up giving in to his advances.

The next morning, Robin lands at her place without any advance notice and on seeing a naked Ashish walk out of her room, stabs him to death in a fit of envious rage. As Anusha gets hysterical and the significance of his impulsive act dawns on Robin, the lovers decide to get rid of the body by chopping it in pieces and burning it in a remote area of Mumbai.

The upset friends of Ashish decide to approach the cops and Anusha tags along to dispel any suspicions. Inspector Mane (Zakir Hussain) hurriedly puts two and two together and arrests Anusha on charges of murder following which Robin too is detained for the murder of Ashish. It is also discovered then that Anusha had lied to Robin about being raped by Ashish which had provoked Robin to commit the murder.

As the court trial ensues, both the lawyers of Robin and Anusha try to save their own clients by making the other accused look bad, leading to a friction between the lovers till Anusha breaks down and reconciles with Robin, admitting that she was not raped and that her dreams of making it big as an actress caused the whole tragedy. The climax scene shows the two lovers being dragged away from each other with a ticker informing the viewers that the verdict is being awaited in the case.

True to form, Dobriyal plays his role of a loose cannon lover efficiently, turning on the intensity in his eyes and body language to make the character convincing. Mahie Gill on her part is passable too in her role as the small town girl with superior dreams. Zakir Hussain's Inspector Mane who investigates the case is again a well-played role with Hussain efficiently exuding an aura of righteous menace even when he is conducting a casual questioning.

Ajay Gehl does not have much to do and regrettably, the late Rasika Joshi (one of the finest character actors in recent times) as Ashish's mother has a very small part to play in the film; same with Darshan Jariwala, who plays a defense advocate. Another fact which is commendable is Varma's refusal to pass any judgment on the horrific episode. Robin is not a bad guy per se (though one might find his feelings for Anusha obsessive and smothering) and Anusha is just like another girl in the city waiting for her dreams to come true.

On the other side, the camera work is a bit sloppy with unnecessarily jerky camera movements even where it is not needed and the camera man's tendency to focus on Mahie's legs and cleavage in almost every scene involving her.

Varma overacts the Rangeela angle with the title track of the movie playing every time Mahie's phone rings and by the first half of the film, the viewer starts wishing Gill could turn her phone on silent mode. Even the murder scene is not as chilling as it could have been made.

It is worthy to watch for some performances in the movie which is 'inspired' by a real life murder case that shook the city in 2008.

RGV deserves standing ovation for an outstanding film like 'Not A Love Story': Mahesh Bhatt

Highly praised filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt explains Ram Gopal Varma as a 'man who has audacity', and tells he should be given a standing ovation for making an 'outstanding' film like 'Not A Love Story', which releases Friday.
'Ram Gopal Varma deserves a standing ovation for making an outstanding movie, 'NOT A LOVE STORY' raises the bar for Indian Cinema,' Bhatt wrote on micro-blogging site.
He watched the movie Tuesday. The film, which features Deepak Dobriyal and Mahie Gill, is inspired by the 2008 murder case of television executive Neeraj Grover, that led to the arrest of Kannada actress Maria Susairaj and co-accused, ex-naval officer Emile Jerome Mathew.
Maria, who was sentenced to three years in jail by a Mumbai court for destroying evidence, was released from jail last month after she completed the term in detention. Emile Jerome was sentenced to 10 years jail term after the court found him 'guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder'.

'Ramu uses a brand new technology in this movie. This movie will certainly be a game changer. Ramgopal Verma's 'Not a love story'...is actually a great love story,' he included.
The film has been in news as Maria sent a legal notice to Varma questioning the content of the movie.

Mahie Gill says, it was horrible to shoot in same flat where real murder happened!

Actress Mahie Gill, who is playing the lead in 'Not A Love Story' based on the horrible murder of TV executive Neeraj Grover, discovered that it was very difficult for her to work on the movie.
'Not a Love Story', directed by Ram Gopal Varma is a crime thriller based on the murder of Neeraj Grover in 2008 that led to the arrest of Emile Jerome and Maria Susairaj.
'It was very difficult working on this film. Initially it was still okay because I had to do the role of a girl who is struggling in the industry. I have done that too because I came from the Punjabi film industry, but the later half when the murder takes place, it was quite difficult,' Mahie said journalists here.
'We were shooting in the same building where the case happened, so it was creepy at times to realize that how it would have been when this crime would have happened in such a small room. We used to talk about all these things,' she told.
The film also stars Deepak Dobriyal and Ajay Gehi and is slated to release Aug 19.
Although it was challenging, but when this role was offered to Mahie, she jumped to it.
'I wanted to work with Ramu sir. I love his films so when I got a call from his office and he told me about the film, I didn't ask any question and said yes. I just wanted to do it,' she disclosed.

Ram Gopal Verma says sorry to Mahie Gill for forcing to enact hot scene!

Hot Kissof Mahie Gill in film movie “Not a Love Story”

Ram Gopal Verma, Mahie Gill
Ram Gopal Verma, not renowned to be a suave and responsive gentleman had apparently sent a text message to Mahie Gill, the heroine of his on-the-sets movie “Not a Love Story”, apologizing for having made her enact the romantic scenes in a very intense and hot fashion.
The love scene with Deepak Dobriyal were so sizzling and hot that Ramu walked out mid-way the scene asking his assistant to complete the canning. He was profusely remorseful to the Gill girl in his text message. On her part, Mahie felt that both the actors were just going through the motions as demanded by the script and that it was very much necessary to infuse that kind of intensity to bring out the scene convincingly. Mahie laughed it off telling that Ramu might have been feeling disturb as if one of his close relatives were involved in the scene – like a sister or a daughter.
Mahie who confirmed that she never involved in skin show so far has inquired of the scene before the shooting and was personally persuaded that it required such a forceful presentation of the emotions to bring life to the scene.
Mahie’s role in the film was somewhat on the lines of Maria Susairaj though the actress snubs out any such comparison saying that the character in the film is a Punjabi kudi, while Maria is from Bangalore.

Frighten Deepak Dobriyal was unable to sleep during shooting of film based on Neeraj Grover's murder!

Deepak Dobriyal
If trial a ghastly murder story can give you gooseflesh, then playing a key role in a movie inspired by television executive Neeraj Grover's murder can affect your mind, tells actor Deepak Dobriyal.
Deepak stars in 'Not A Love Story', a crime thriller helmd by Ram Gopal Varma that comes out Aug 19, which features Mahie Gill and Ajay Gehi.
'The way Ramuji used to tell the story or the scene to us, it used to really shake us up. During initial shooting days, I couldn't sleep at night because I used to get those visions. It really affected me mentally. But that was important also because I had to be completely in my character to act it in front of the camera,' Deepak told.
'I got really psyched out in the beginning and used to get up at night. But then I got used to it and the feeling sank in,' added the actor who was seen in movies like 'Tanu Weds Manu', 'Teen Thay Bhai', 'Gulaal', 'Delhi 6' and 'Omkara'.
Neeraj Grover was murdered in 2008 and it led to the arrest of Kannada actress Maria Susairaj and her boyfriend Emile Jerome Mathew. According to information, Grover was stabbed and then cut in 300 pieces.
Maria was sentenced to three years in jail last week for demolishing evidence in the Grover murder case. Since she had already served more than three years as an under trial, she was ordered to be released once she had paid the compensation amount of Rs.50,000 to the victim's family.
Her co-accused and fiancé, ex-naval officer Mathew, was sentenced to 10 years' jail term after the court found him 'guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder'.
In the movie, Deepak plays a possessive and aggressive lover who kills the other character and tells the film is inspired by one of the most horrible crimes of passion.
'Instead of calling it based on the murder, it's better that we say it was inspired by it. A lot of incidents happen around you and you tend to use aspects of them in a movie. But it's not based on that incident; there are a lot of changes,' he told.
The first look of the movie is out and it is being termed as very gory. When asked the 35-year-old actor whether people will accept so much violence, he told, 'It is not violent.'
'The treatment of the movie makes it look violent, otherwise it is not. There are no scenes that are actually violent or gruesome, but the treatment with technical aspects and camera angle is such that it looks frightening. Otherwise, there isn't so much blood or anything,' he told.
For the movie, Deepak has also changed his look as both 'Ramuji and I wanted a changed look. I tried the look and showed it to him and he instantly told yes and finalized it.
'Changing the appearance was also important because the other guy in the film, his character, looks very decent; so if even I would have kept a similar look then there would have been no difference in us. So in order to create drama, I changed my look,' he included.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has lodged a complaint against the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) for menacing him after he expressed his wish to cast Kannada actress Maria Monica Susairaj, convicted for the murder of a television executive, in his next movie inspired by the same case.
“Just lodged a complaint with the versova police against the BJP yuva morchas threat to me on the maria susairaj issue… Other organizations warnings I got to hear from the media but the BJP sent a signed warning letter directly to my office,” Ramu posted on his blog after lodging the complaint.
The filmmaker also tweeted in support of Maria Susairaj. He told that someone who has been set free by the law has every right to start her life afresh.
“If sm1 hs bn convicted nd the person servd a gvn sentence she has a right to start her life afresh nd thts a part of civilized society… Maria is nt my sister or my girl friend nd I don’t evn knw her ..so its nt about supporting her but its about standing fr my beliefs… Evn aftr court gve its judgement if even the least informed ppl are raising so much noise doesn’t it come under contempt of court… Public opinion is fine but isn’t there a difference btwn opinion nd an informed opinion? nd who can be more informed than the judge?” Ramu posted.

RGV wants praise Big B; No ridiculing tweet!

The Maria Susairaj and Neeraj Grover case has earned the attention in major with Ram Gopal Varma unveiling the 'first look' of his latest film Not A Love Story. And although Varma has cried himself hoarse asserting that his film is not a bio pic, but is only "inspired" by the true life happening, the irrepressible director earned major stares over his tweets over Bachchan and Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap.

The tweets, prima facie, if read briefly and carelessly, would make it seem as if Varma was being sharp and abusive. On a second (tweet) read, however, the meaning, rather the indirect praise would be more clear... although the South director in his trademark style did use a few choice Hindi expletives to get his point across.

"I did use the words that I did in my tweets because I loved Amitabh Bachchan in Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap and it was my way of praising him," told Varma in a media interaction. "Having loved his work in movies such as Silsila, Kaalia, Don, Hum and so many others, I felt that he should have done a movie like 'Bbuddah' long time ago, that's what I thought when I saw the film."
