Film Mausam Review

Mausam Review
Film: 'Mausam'; Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Supriya Pathak, Anupam Kher and Aditi Sharma; Writer-Director: Pankaj Kapoor;

MAUSAM had generated wonderful excitement prior to its release for varied reasons. One of the key reasons being, it is directed by one of the most respected and accomplished actors of India -- Pankaj Kapur.

'Mausam' is a movie that has some severe errors, but finally holds together as a work of renaissance art, more notable, in parts wonderful, for what it attempts rather than what it finally achieves.

Pankaj Kapoor takes the Muslim-Hindu love story between a Kashmiri refugee girl and a Punjabi boy through an arching sweep of history. Every historical trauma that has defined and dishonored India and Indians in the last 30 years props up as a vital image to underline the love story.

MAUSAM is being advocated as one of the greatest, epic love stories on celluloid. A story talks of unconditional love against all difficulties. First-time director Pankaj Kapur narrates a saga of star-crossed lovers facing various storms in their lives and of course, seasons.

The story begins in the early 1990s and concludes a decade later, encompassing historical events that affected our lives -- displacement of Kashmiri Pandits, Babri Masjid episode, Mumbai blasts, 9/11, Kargil war and Gujarat riots. Though the on-screen characters make a veiled attack on the atrocities inflicted on the common man, MAUSAM remains a love story at heart. One has come to expect mesmeric romance and lilting tunes, backed by sensitive portrayals, from a true-blue romantic movie.

Regrettably, MAUSAM suffers for the very reason that one may have assumed would be its main strength - writing. The screenplay, to put it directly, is unable to engage viewers properly and what makes it worse is the fact that it seems like a never-ending saga.

The movie just goes on and on and on, moving from one city/country to another, till the viewer gets jetlagged and tired by watching this story unfurl on screen.

With a running time of close to 3 hours, MAUSAM has a few sequences that do stand out, but the feeble script blows the efforts away.  MAUSAM starts with mere adolescent attraction between a Punjabi boy Harry (Shahid Kapoor) and a Kashmiri girl Aayat (Sonam Kapoor) in a small village of Punjab. It develops into young love between them in season two. Their love realizes its own depth in the hours of separation through season three. In the fourth and final season, their love culminates into togetherness. But not before sacrificing a lot personally and learning the truth behind universal love. MAUSAM has an old-world charm, no two opinions about it. The magic of the good old days is delicious and it's a great feeling to go back in time. Right from the setting to the costumes to the overall ambience, the movie succeeds in pulling you back in time.

Pankaj Kapur is a brilliant actor and has tried well, but after a point, MAUSAM becomes a tedious experience that sets in boredom and tests the patience of the viewer. The production values are excellent and producers Sheetal Vinod Talwar and Sunil Lulla deserve credit for giving the movie a huge look.

The soundtrack of MAUSAM is a pleasure for listeners. The songs that stand out are 'Sajh Dhaj Ke' and 'Rabba Main Toh Mar Gaya Oye'. Binod Pradhan's cinematography is extraordinary.

Shahid surrenders to his director-father with his all resources and talents to this role. The big thing is that Shahid surpasses all his earlier performances, including the one in KAMINEY, with this movie. MAUSAM will prove to be a turning point for confident Sonam Kapoor’s career in bollywood. Supriya Pathak Kapur is matchless. Anupam Kher is OK. Manoj Pahwa is magnificent, as always. The actors essaying the role of Sonam's father and sister are natural. Vaibhav Talwar gets no scope. Aditi Sharma excels in a brief role.

On the whole, MAUSAM is a good film for seeing Sonam and Shahid performances!

Sonam talks a lot; I actually had to ask her to keep her mouth shut: Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor is flying high...really. After all, he is playing an Indian Army pilot in his father Pankaj Kapoor's directorial debut movie MAUSAM.
Speaking on his experience with Sonam Kapoor, he told, "Sonam talks a lot; I actually had to ask her to keep her mouth shut. However, I must say she has a great understanding of fashion, in fact every time I am out for MAUSAM's promotion, I need to take an approval from her for my clothes."
Confessing his mistake, Shahid revealed, "I have to start doing 3 movies per year. Bahut galti kar di. Itna choosy hone ke baad bhi kitni filme nahi chali, to phir kya point hai."
MAUSAM being written and directed by Shahid's father, Pankaj Kapoor is making Shahid pretty anxious. Explaining it further he told "Two years back, dad gifted me MAUSAM's script on my birthday. I was very nervous initially, as I had to act in front of Dad whom I consider to be one of the finest actors in the country."
The film consumed almost 2 years of Shahid's life and now when the movie is on the verge of release, Shahid shared, "I can't sit still these days."
Finally speaking on his current relationship with long time rumored girlfriend Priyanka Chopra, Shahid stated, "I won't say anything until I find somebody with whom I want to spend my life. I haven't found that person so far."

Sonam Kapoor thinks pure romance is lost somewhere!

Sonam Kapoor would any day go for handwritten love letters - never mind if she belongs to the tech- savvy generation. The young actress, who takes failures in her stride, feels pure romance has vanished not only from movies but also from real life.
The 26-year-old believes her most recent movie, 'Mausam', will help revive the old world charm of romance.
'Pure romance is lost somewhere and that's why we are trying to get that back. I know people will connect to it because someone like me, who lives in this generation, wonders why there aren't more romantic films,' Sonam said in an interview.
The daughter of actor Anil Kapoor, Sonam entered Bollywood four years ago with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Saawariya' and 'Mausam' will be her sixth release.
'I have grown as a person and have developed better relationships with people in these four years, but I have a really long way to go. I can be a better actor, a better dancer and a better orator. I think it is all a growth process. I know I can improve and hopefully with each film I have improved,' told Sonam.
After playing an fashionable girl in 'Aisha', she will etch the role of a traditional Kashmiri girl who falls in love with a Punjabi boy, played by Shahid Kapoor in 'Mausam' directed by Pankaj Kapoor.
'I think in this world where there is terror, political unrest, corruption and even nature is going against us - everything seems to be going wrong. I think there is one thing that is positive and that is love, it's the only thing that can change people,' she included.
Through Sonam and Shahid's character, the essence of romance that perhaps dates back to the 1960s or 1970s era is recreated -- the movie shows how they meet and fall in love and how social, political situations play villain and separate the lovers.
Set for a Sep 23 release, the movie is made in a time when youngsters are hooked to mobile phones and prefer expressing themselves through SMS or social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. But in 'Mausam', Sonam and Shahid express their feelings through handwritten love letters.
Sonam, who has also done movies like 'Delhi 6', 'I Hate Luv Storys' and 'Thank You', feels writing one's feelings on a piece of paper is the most 'charming' and 'personal' way of expressing love.
'Today people express their feelings on mails and SMSs. Although technology is cool, it is so impersonal. Even though we are connected to each and everyone, we are so distant at the same time; there is so much dichotomy. It is so superficial.'
'I find it really charming where people can connect on a personal level with you through a handwritten paper. I feel that the bond that gets formed is not only personal, it also gets deeper. Obviously that connect is missing today,' included the 25-year-old.
Sonam has had her share of heartbreaks when her movies have failed to create magic at the box office, but the actress is undeterred.
'I don't consider things as good and bad. It's about working hard and hoping for the best. If things do not happen for the best, may be it is karma or destiny or it is something that you deserve,' she told.
'I am not bitter about anything. Everybody says you are always so happy and cheerful; this is because I am not affected by what is happening around me. All I want to do is to work. I never fear failure because if you don't fail you will never know the secret of success,' she included.
However, Sonam confesses she still has a 'lot of inhibitions about doing certain kind of movies, but then I feel I am an actor and should be able to do anything and everything. I am slowly overcoming my inhibitions. It'll take time but I know I can'.

Shahid Kapoor's Mausam in legal problem!

Pankaj Kapur is facing some legal complications freshly for his film Mausam. His movie “Mausam” which is one of the most talked about forthcoming films is the centre of these hassles. Pankaj’s friend Nawman Malik is now claiming that “Mausam” is actually registered under his name, and so he along with Motion Pictures and Producers of TV Programmes, have lodged a complaint again Pankaj Kapur. Nawman also told that even the story of the movie is actually written by himself.
Nawman has clarified that quite a few years back, he read the tale to Pankaj at the latter’s office in Versova. Pankaj carefully heard the story for some hours, and soon after expressed his interest that he would love to make a movie based on Nawman’s tale. Nawman included that Pankaj liked the story so much so that, he immediately decided to cast Shahid in the movie.

Later when Nawman asked about the movie, Pankaj avoided him by telling once Shahid returns to India from overseas, they will discuss about the movie. One day, when Nawman came to know about the movie, he was sure that Pankaj is using his story for the movie.
For using the title given by Nawman, he has demanded Rs 1 crore from Pankaj and producer Sheetal Talwar. Nawman has filed the petition in Mumbai High Court.

Shahid Kapoor is only Bollywood star who flew F-16, the country’s premier fighter aircraft!

Shahid Kapoor, the only Bollywood star who flew F-16, the country’s premier fighter aircraft, has at last finished the shooting of movie “Mausam” - the debut movie of his father, Pankaj Kapoor.
Started some two years back, Mausam has had to face several delays, including its main star Sonam falling sick and both Shahid and Sonam seemingly developing rift while working in the film.
Though afterward rejected by Sonam, the differences between them have actually played a major role in the shooting to be delayed so long. Shahid worked continuously over these two years to see his father’s first project hit the screen. However, viewers might have to wait for some more time before they can lay their eyes on the film. The latest schedule for the film release was September 9 but yet again it is deferred by one more week.
The repeated postponement of the film release has its ripple effect on the ongoing projects of Shahid. He was to start work on Kohli’s movie instantly after Mausam was slated for September 9. But now with the movie being delayed again, the schedule of Shahid seems to have gone haywire. He plans to concentrate on promoting his dad’s film before jumping into any other assurance.

The fight of three Gen-X superstars on Sep 9!

It looks like the glam dream of seeing the three gen-X superstars Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan locked in a clash to the finish would remain just a daydream. The expected clash Sep 9 this year between Shahid's 'Mausam', Ranbir's 'Rockstar' and Imran's 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan' is not happening!
Though official sources declare otherwise, director Imtiaz Ali's 'Rockstar' has been moved forward to November.
There seems to be no limit to the delays being caused in the release of 'Rock Star'. Though officially the newest release date is Sep 9, there is no doubt the movie has been secretly shifted to November and it looks like there are chances of further delays.
In fact source very close to the project validates 'Rock Star' has been shifted to November.
'For now we've shifted to November. But this again is not sure. We could move further ahead,' he tells.
But producers Eros International maintain the status quo on the release.
A Eros source tells, 'As of now we are not in a position to comment on whether the release date has been shifted from Sep 9. As soon as we get a clearer picture we will let you know.'
The newest buzz is that 'Rock Star' may not be released this year at all. It could now be released at the beginning of 2012. The main reason for the delay is said to be the music of the movie.
The source tells, 'A.R. Rahman has still to do a couple of tunes and the full background music. However, Imtiaz is really happy with the music that Rahman has done so far. In fact, Imtiaz knows the musical film is being transported to another level, thanks to Rahman's music.
The delay in the release is getting too expensive, he includes.
'The delay is proving expensive to the film's producers Eros International and Shree Ashtavinayak. It's also Nargis Fakhri's debut movie. And she's getting anxious to sign other films. She's flooded with offers. But as per her contract, she can't sign any other film until 'Rock Star' releases,' he tells.
The biggest sufferer is Anurag Basu and his producer UTV, whose dates for Ranbir Kapoor in 'Barfi' keep getting allotted to Imtiaz Ali's 'Rock Star'.
With 'Rockstar' songs yet to be delivered, it looks like Basu's 'Barfi' may yet have to suffer some more date-adjustment hassles.
