Stereotyping is the most common practice, says Vinay Pathak!

Actor Vinay Pathak, often seen playing light-hearted characters in movies like "Chalo Dilli", "Dasvidaniya", and "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi", tells one gets typecast from his or her first film itself.

"In our film industry, from the first film, you get typecast. And this is everywhere. Stereotyping is the most common practice," Vinay said.

But the true challenge lies in doing the job differently, he feels.

"In my case, I have tried to do different characters. They are not all comic roles, they are very strong characters," told the 45-year-old who plays a serious role in his next "Bajatey Raho".

Directed by Shashant Shah, "Bajatey Raho, a revenge comedy, also starring Vishakha Singh, Tusshar Kapoor, Ranvir Shorey and Dolly Ahluwalia, is coming out Friday.

Shooting for the movie in Delhi's winters was "wonderful" for the actor, who also enjoyed collaborating with his old friends Shashant and Ranvir. "Finally, we were coming together to do a film," he further added.

After being part of about 40 projects, the actor concludes that comedy comes from situations and not characters.

"I am not playing a deliberate comic character. The comedy comes out of situations. Like even in 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', my character was a real character and had no quirky code of conduct. He was stuck in situations, which created real, poignant and funny situations," he told.

For Vinay, the director's vision is important.

"Executing the script and vision of the director are important... The challenge is to tell the story the way he (director) wants it to be told," he told.

'There is an understanding between me and Saurabh. It is not just about the work we do, its also about the great equation we share with each other. We can sense what we want from each other. I have huge respect for him as an actor, as a writer and as director,' Vinay told.
The two have been co-stars in 'Mithya', 'Khoya Khoya Chand' or 'Oh My God' and 'Utt Patang'. Saurabh has also directed Vinay in 'Raat Gayi Baat Gayi?'.

When we are not discussing films, we play badminton or just chat and tell each other stories. He is a wonderful storyteller and a wonderful writer. That's what binds us together,' he included.

Sagar Ballary‘s Guftagoo with Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey!

Director Sagar Ballary

Vinay Pathak

Ranvir Shorey

Rajat Kapoor
Bheja Fry 3, for those who are interested, is postponed until that time when director Sagar Ballary cracks a screenplay valuable of that fascinating bore Bharat Bhushan's return trip.

In September, Ballary starts another movie. Entitled Guftagoo, this is a chamber piece with only 6 characters.

Sagar has signed his old favorite Vinay Pathak and Pathak's best friend Ranvir Shorey for two of the roles. But the most important part of the movie is to be played by a 30-plus leading lady whom Ballary has already sounded out for the part.

Ballary reveals, "I wouldn't like to mention her name yet until she has signed the film. But it'd be a dream-come-true to work with her. Luckily for me she likes my work, has seen Bheja Fry 2 and called me to congratulate me after seeing it."

Sagar wants to cast this iconic actress and his old favorite Rajat Kapoor as man and wife in Gufatgoo.

Speaking of Kapoor, he was sorely missed in Bheja Fry 2. Sagar Ballary promises the third part won't be made without Mr Kapoor.

Sagar tells, "Rajat couldn't do Bheja Fry 2. But he has made it very clear that we can't make the third part without him. My writer Sharad Kataria would have to crack an idea that'd take the story forward. There's no point in doing another Bheja Fry movie if we don't have the plot in place."

Film Review - 'Bheja Fry 2'

Movie Review: 'Bheja Fry 2';
Director: Sagar Ballary;
Cast: Vinay Pathak, Kay Kay Menon, Minissha Lamba, Suresh Menon and Amole Gupte;

When 'Bheja Fry' was released in 2007, mostly a shot by shot copy of the 1998 French hit 'Le Diner De Cons' (The Dinner Game), no one anticipated it to be such a smash hit. Yet, in the character of Bharat Bhushan, they had created a character people could relate to, so what if the French had done all the hard work behind it.
Four years later, Mr. Bhushan is back to irritate the bad guys and spread his good humored innocence around. And though it is at least half an hour too long, it still works.
After winning a TV contest, tax-inspector Bharat Bhushan (Vinay Pathak) is invited to be part of a cruise ship. Also on leisure journey is fraudster Ajit Talwar (Kay Kay Menon) who comes to know of a tax inspector in disguise on the boat out to catch him. He thinks it is Bhushan and tries to kill him only for both him and Bhushan to be stranded on an abandoned island.
Will Talwar survive Bhushan's antics?
'Bheja Fry 2' does not have the innocent charm of the first part. Generally the surprise element of the first is gone and also because unlike in the original, which was a copy, the makers have had to put their thinking cap on. Thus while the original seemed spotless in its conception, this one jars more than once during it over two hour duration.
The greatest unpredictability is in the camera work, which would go into extreme close up, and suddenly drawback to give a panorama, causing undesired irritation.
Instead of relying on humor, the film relies on situational humor. That is indeed a refreshing change for an Indian comedy. However, many humorous possibilities from these situations are simply frittered away, mainly on a cruise boat full of pompous, rich people, thus showing poor imagination from the creators.
The metaphor of the original, which was not to judge a man by the way he behaves and instead to look at his heart, has been made. There's nothing to look forward to in this pitting of an irritating but true man versus a suave conman.
Also, this part overshoots its welcome by at least half an hour, with some stupid, clichéd gags. A tighter editing, to match the length of the original would have evened out a lot of rough edges.
Yet, as popular comedies go in India, it is better than what the audiences in this nation are conned for in the name of comedy with movies full of silly, sexist jokes, overdone and badly executed gags and complete lack of situational comedy.
Without knowing thus, 'Bheja Fry 2' becomes a metaphor for what is wrong with popular Indian comedy today, unlike the comedies of the 1960s and 1970s: need of fresh ideas and creative talents with the sense and timing enough to execute it.
Overall, it is ok to see once. It will sustain for a sometime due to Vinay Pathak presence.
