Fugly can't, in all good conscience, be called an
actual film -- but it is the most correctly titled mess of all time. There is
nothing much to talk about Fugly. It’s a bad movie. And you don’t get deluded
for a moment that the movie has Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar in it. They’re
just there for a song that isn’t even a part of the movie.
Four carefree friends Dev (Mohit Marwah), Aditya (Arfi
Lamba), Devi(Kiara Advani) and Gaurav (Vijendra Singh) do not have the
slightest clue that their lives will take a terrible turn once they’re out of
college. They are seen taking on the big bad world and dealing with wrong
people, unwarranted persons and above all a corrupt cop (Jimmy Shergill).
In one of the key scenes in the film, Jimmy Sheirgill, who
plays a brutal cop, does some calculations based on all the charges he wishes
to impose over the four youngsters who get caught up in his trap. After
arriving at an official figure, he adds VAT over it, hence making it 10 times
the figure that results in an astounding figure of over 60 lakhs. Even as the
youngsters are shocked, Jimmy gives a 'business as usual' look, hence
concluding one of the finest scenes that one has seen in a film belonging to
this genre.
Hence, one is exposed to farmhouse parties where lakhs are
earned in a matter of a single night, cops create and burn evidences on will,
spy cams are accessible for one and all with an eye on porn, rich kids are
considered as criminals by default, an attractively dressed girl is automatically
considered available, hanging out with boys can actually be just friendship,
politician families don't necessarily come for their kins' defence always and
ghoonghat clad girls are not actually coy.
We thought this film was a mix of numerous movies
specifically Rang De Basanti, Shaitaan, Highway and Fukrey. However, all those movies
were 100 times better than FUGLY.
We absolutely have no idea who the stars of the movie are.
Vijender Singh is much better in the boxing ring than on silver screen. The
rest just don’t make a difference. The only person who actually contributed to
the movie is actor Jimmy Shergill.
Director Kabir Sadanand tries being new but fails gloomily.
Fugly is one such movie that has utterly nothing to offer. If there’s one good thing
the movie can boast about then it’s the music. Some songs are really catchy.
All of this makes Fugly yet another different offering by
producers Akshay Kumar and Ashvini Yardi who disobey norms by bringing
something unconventional, yet entertaining.
In short, there is a world out there - a real one at that -
where there is a lot of fugliness amidst the goodness it has to offer.
Overall, it is an average film without any great
entertainment quotient.
