For Hema Malini, he was a 'real hero', and for Asha Parekh, working with him was 'like being on an express train' -- two veteran Bollywood beauties remember their time with evergreen star Dev Anand who, according to them, lived life to the fullest.

Dev Anand, who devoted over six decades of his life to Indian cinema, died following cardiac arrest in London Sunday. He was 88.

'My mother was a huge fan of Dev saab, so I grew up hearing his name and watching his films. How was I to know that one day I'd go on to do many films with him? I started my career with one legendary actor Raj Kapoor, then I quickly did 'Johnny Mera Naam' with Dev Saab. You can imagine how nervous I was. I was so young and he was a huge star. But he never made me feel like a newcomer,' told Hema.

'We were signed for several films together. I had the privilege of being directed by all the three brothers Chetan Anand, Dev and Vijay Anand. But I didn't get a chance to be directed by Dev saab until very late in 'Shareef Budmaash'. He was a perfectionist. He would be the first on the sets with that trademark stick in his hand.’

'I asked him why he carried that 'chhadi' with him. He told me it was to prod those who wasted his time. Dev Saab was always on the move. He was so restless, and he didn't appreciate people around him who couldn't keep pace with him. Watching him at work was like taking a Vitamin tablet,' she included.

Hema and Dev Anand worked in other movies like 'Amir Garib' and 'Joshila' as well.

'He could convince me to do any role. I agreed to do a guest appearance in 'Tere Mere Sapne' because of Dev saab and Vijay Anand saab. Working with Dev saab was always a pleasure. He was a very learned man and he was so articulate. He spoke very beautiful English. He was a real hero,' told the 63-year-old.

Asha, who worked with Dev Anand in 'Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai', 'Mahal' and 'Kahin Aur Chal', is disturb that this year she lost two of her favourite co-stars -- first Shammi Kapoor, and now Dev Anand.

'We did three films together. Out of them Nasir Hussain saab's 'Jab Pyar Kissise Hota Hai' was a huge success. We had a ball shooting that film. I was relatively new and Nasir saab and Dev saab were big names. Dev saab was so full of beans, he made me feel like a has-been even at that young age. He could never sit still. He'd be all over the place, 'Asha, do this, do that. Don't stand there. Go go go...' The clock never stopped for him. Working with him was like being on an express train. The journey was relentless and exhilarating,' Asha Parekh told.

'We went on to do two other films 'Mahal' and 'Kahin Aur Chal'. Dev Saab was such a huge star that people didn't give him enough credit as an actor. He was very stylish. But he was also a brilliant actor. His clothes, hairstyle, the way he talked and waked exuded glamour and uniqueness. And he was a complete film person. Actor, director, writer, producer.... He lived breathed, ate and slept cinema, included Asha.

The 69-year-old says Dev Anand's passion for work was infectious.

'Today, I see that kind of passion only in Aamir Khan. Dev Saab's enthusiasm infected everyone he worked with. I couldn't keep in touch with him much because he spent most of his time in Mahabaleshwar writing, thinking new ideas. He would barely be finished with one film and he would already be planning his next.

'I think he lived, really lived. All of us others are just not that charged about life. There can never be another Dev Anand,' she included in his memory.

Evergreen romantic star Dev Anand’s sad demise!

Evergreen romantic star Dev Anand, who has given classic movies like 'Guide' and 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' and epitomized the charming, urban gentleman on screen, died after a cardiac arrest in London. He was 88.
Mohan Churiwala, Dev Anand's manager, said that the actor passed away in a London hotel where he was staying with his son, Sunil, a one-time actor. According to Churiwala, Sunil saw Dev Anand not responding and called the doctor. 'The doctor told that he had a heart attack. He died at 10 in the night in London,' he told.
The iconic star is survived by his wife, former actress Kalpana Karthik, Sunil and a daughter.
According to Churiwala, the cremation will be held next week in London. 'He will be cremated in London only after Tuesday. Cremation cannot take place till his daughter reaches there. His body is kept in a hospital right now,' adding that his wife may also go with her daughter.
Dev Anand, who started his career in the black and white era with 1946 movie 'Hum Ek Hain', spent 65 years under the arc lights as an actor and filmmaker. The actor worked determinedly, coming up with new movies after short intervals. He never hung his boots or sat on his laurels. In fact, before his death, he was planning another movie.
His latest movie 'Chargesheet', which he acted and directed and was released this year, became his swan song.
His amazing zest for life and dynamism became a source of motivation for many.
His nephew and acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur summed up his 65-year-long journey in showbiz appropriately by saying, 'Dev Anand lived and died at his own terms. He was working one minute. Sat down and smiled. And was gone the next. So much 2 learn,' posted Kapur, who reconnected with his indefatigable uncle Dev Anand after eight years.
From colleagues to fans - everyone woke up to a rude Sunday morning shock as the news of the legendary actor's passing away in London outspread here.
Actress Preity Zinta posted, 'Woke up to the sad News of Dev Saheb's demise! May God give peace to his soul ! He inspired us all by living his life 2 the fullest. R.I.P'. Abhishek Bachchan, her co-star from 'Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom', told, 'Never believed I would ever wake up to this news. Very sad!'
Prem Dube, Dev Anand's driver for the last 22 years, told he had not able to stop his tears since morning.
'I have been praying why God did not take me away instead of Dev Anand? He had given his entire life the industry and they needed him... He was himself a God,' Dube told.
A close aide of the deceased actor, Chandra Shekhar, (himself 89), told he was 'shaken' when he heard the news from a friend, the first thing this morning.
'I only wish that this time the news should be wrong... Dev saab had given his soul to the industry and now his life... I personally feel that he could not accept the fate of his latest movie,' Shekhar said.
Dev Anand seemed to have adopted the philosophy of the song 'Main Zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya' from 'Hum Dono', in real life too. His body of work speaks volumes about the man who was not only a great actor, but multi-tasker and a trendsetter.
If as an actor he proved his flexibility with hits like 'Tere Ghar Ke Samne', 'Jewel Thief' and Guide', as a director he made a 'zara hatke' movie 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' that also gave Bollywood its first anglicised glamour icon in Zeenat Aman.
He played a long innings in filmdom and saw ups and downs, but his never-say-die spirit reigned supreme. His fans and colleagues still tell, 'Abhi na jao chodkar ki dil abhi bhara nahin'.

Dev Anand has same enthusiasm for new projects at age of 88 years!

'Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya' -- true to his popular song, Dev Anand, one of the most loveable romantic heroes of the 1950s and the 1960s, has rejected to let age slow him down. He turned 88 Monday thrilled about new movies and his birthday gift -- an I-Phone.
He has announced the sequel to his hit film 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' and is looking forward to the release of 'Chargesheet'.
'I am having a meeting with Warner Brothers, my producers of 'Chargesheet', about the premiere on Monday morning. In the evening, my friends have planned a dinner. A lot of eminent people think my birthday is worth celebrating,' told Dev Anand, who has been part of the Hindi film industry for the past 65 years.
The Padma Bhushan awardee and Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner continues to be as charged up about his new movie 'Chargesheet', which opens Friday, as he has been about all his other movies.
'If I'm not as passionate about my new film then I've no business making it. The very fact that I've picked up the responsibility of directing another movie proves I've the energy for it. The day I don't, I won't make any more movies. My audience, my fans are my source of energy. I need my fans' good wishes... they give me my energy,' tells Dev saab.
The movie is a different genre for the octogenarian, who tells, 'I haven't done this genre before. It's a murder mystery.'
The sequel to 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna' brings back the character that Dev saab played in the original, 39 years after it first appeared.
It seems that the character would have aged by less than a decade in the sequel, as the story moves forward. The hunt is on for what the evergreen superstar describes as 'a woman of today, trendy savvy with-it and attractive'.
'I have the script for 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna Aaj', which takes forward the story of the previously movie. It is not a remake of 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna'. I don't believe in remakes. I believe in moving forward. Every scene every character except mine would be new. If Dev Anand played Prashant in 1971, he will play Prashant in 2012 as well,' he told.
The legend confesses that he starts thinking of his next movie even before he has completed a film.
'If you want to describe Dev Anand, it would have to be as 'restlessness'. While I am making a film I am totally consumed by it. But yes, a part of my mind moves to the next project.'
Ask him what are his birthday wishes, and the inimitable Dev saab explains, 'I don't make wishes. I make them come true. I go with exactly what I want to do. It's an ongoing process. As long as I feel creative and as long as I feel there're some people who want to watch my films, I'll continue to make them.'
Is any message for his fans?
'I love my fans and seek their good wishes all the time. The younger generations is so clued in, so huge in mind and impact. As they connect with me I feel my batteries being recharged. Some of the most remarkable minds of the world stay in our country. And I give them my love and good wishes. Continue to see my films.'
His filmography includes hits like 'Baazi', 'Munimji', 'C.I.D.', 'Paying Guest', 'Solva Saal', 'Kala Pani',' Kala Bazar','Bombai Ka Babu', 'Manzil, 'Tere Ghar Ke Samne' 'Asli-Naqli', 'Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai', 'Teen Deviyaan', and not to forget his all time classic 'Guide'.
